Clinical studies

A clinical study showed that Actos can be associated with various side-effects. Such side-effects include headaches, nausea, sinus irritation, muscle pain, tooth pain, fatigue and sore throat. However, serious side-effects may in include, rapid weight gain, blurry vision, symptoms of low and high blood sugar, severe allergic reactions and respiratory failure.

FDA reviews

In France, Actos sales were suspended after it was linked to bladder cancer by a review from the FDA. However, Actos has not been recalled in America. The FDA required that Actos have a black box warning on its label. The black box warning is one of the highest warnings that can be issued by the FDA. It warns users of the potentially serious side-effects. Along with bladder cancer, Actos can cause heart failure and an increased risk for bone fractures.

 

Investigations

In April of 2011, a study by Italian researchers discovered that over a fifth of users taking Actos developed bladder cancer. The FDA started an investigation seven months prior to this finding for the same reason. The FDA had started its investigation of Actos in 2010 after data from Takeda Pharmaceuticals suggested that it was linked to bladder cancer.

If the FDA discovers that the risk of cancer outweighs the benefits, Actos may be banned in the United States.
